Karva Chauth is a popular festival done by Hindu women for the long life of their husbands or fiances. Because of its enormous cultural and social importance, and emotional attachment between the spouses, Karva Cauth festival has become well-known in the modern times. Traditionally, on the occasion of Karva Chauth, married women abstain from eating or drinking water from sunrise till the moment of the moonrise, for the well-being of their husbands/fiances by following rituals. They break their day long fast, only after the moon becomes visible in the evening and when husbands offer water or food.

Now portraying such traditions has become an important aspect of our Hindi movies. On the occasion of Karva Chauth, here's a look at the unusual and interesting depiction of the festival in Bollywood over the years.

Maang Bharo Sajana

Though we have seen Karva Chauth sequences in a couple of recent films, one of the first movies to have a full-fledged Karva Chauth sequence was seen in 'Maang Bharo Sajana'. Released in the 1980's, this movie starred Jeetendra, Rekha and Maushmi Chatterjee in lead.

In Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, one can perhaps be called the most famous Karva Chauth sequence in Bollywood. Here both Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol fast for each other, and break it after SRK manages to sneak out of the main ceremony to meet and break Kajol's fast, Faking a dizzy spell she manages to partake the first sip of water from Shahrukh's hand.

Dilwale Dulhania Le JayengeHum Aapke Hain Koun!

The first film that showed a larger than life 'Karva Chauth' ceremony was in Sooraj Barjatya's 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun!'. Barjatya, who is quite known to make family dramas, showcased the festival of Karva Chauth flamboyantly with the participation of entire family.

In Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Aishwarya Rai is forced by her family to marry Ajay Devgn. Even during her Karva Chauth, she wants to see her love Salman Khan's face, but she has to face Ajay. Also Ash imagined her lover Salman in the song 'Chand Chupa Aanchal Mein...' and not her reel-husband Ajay Devgn.

Hum Dil De Chuke SanamBaghban

Baghban is a touching tale of an old couple, where the old-aged Hema Malini is shown keeping a 'vrath' for her eternal lover-husband Amitabh Bachchan. Karva Chauth confirms the strong bond between a husband and wife, and Amitabh and Hema Malini's touching portrayal of a 60-plus husband-wife in Baghban was played with perfection.

BaghbanHamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai

In Humare Dil Aapke Paas Hai, Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya are seen in a Karva Chauth sequence. Although the couple aren't married, nor do have they proposed each other, but they have a strong bonding of love between them.

Hamara Dil Aapke Paas HaiYes Boss

In Yes Boss, Juhi Chawla fasts for Shah Rukh Khan, even though they aren't husband and wife in the movie. The lead characters are forced by situations to act as married partners, but Juhi sticks to the tradition to keep Shah Rukh's mother happy.

Yes BossBiwi No. 1

This was a rather bizarre Karva Chauth sequence in movie 'Biwi No. 1'. Salman Khan is married to Karisma Kapoor, but he is with his lover Sushmita Sen when it's time to break the fast. However, then his pet dog comes and breaks the tradition, where Salman eventually gets caught red-handed by Karisma.

Biwi No. 1Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is a typical Karan Johar film, where like everything else, the blissful tradition of Karva Chauth is being celebrated lavishly. The famous reel-life couple Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol refreshes the memory of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, and the celebrated real-life couple Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan are seen celebrating the festival in this movie.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie GhamIshq Vishk

In Ishq Vishk, Amrita Rao and Shahid Kapoor are just college students and not married, but the former still wants to keep a 'vrath' for her boyfriend, and Kapoor obliges, although half-heartedly. It's quite sweet and cute sequence, where the makers have shown a true love inside girl's heart. After watching this, many lovebirds may have been motivated to follow the rituals.
